While migrating from Novell GroupWise 5.5 by using the Microsoft Exchange Migration Wizard, the migration wizard may generate a Dr. Watson event. Therefore, if you are running the Migration Wizard on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer, the following event may be logged:

Event Type: Information

Event Source: DrWatson

Event Category: None

Event ID: 4097

Description:

The application, mailmig.exe, generated an application error. The error occurred on MM/DD/YYYY at HH:MM:SS The exception was c0000005 at address 672817E5.

This event gets generated after you type the path to the Novell GroupWise 5.x domain, account name and password and then click Next to start the GroupWise startup process. If you run the Migration Wizard on Windows 2000 Server-based computer, the Migration Wizard disappears from the screen and Dr. Watson event is logged in the Windows 2000 Event Viewer. While working on Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 based computer, the Dr. Watson event is displayed on the screen.

The reason behind the occurrence of this issue is that the GroupWise Client 5.5.3 Gwcmb1.dll file returns unexpected results that cause the Migration Wizard to stop working. Although the Mailmig.exe file generated an application error, the Mailmig.exe file is not the cause of this issue.

In order to resolve this issue, you need to downgrade the GroupWise Client that is installed on the migration server to one of the following versions: 5.5, 5.5.1 or 5.5.2. Now if in case you come across any issues while replying to migrated messages from GroupWise 5.5 it may be necessary to use GroupWise Client 5.2.x.

When you try migrating email messages from Novell GroupWise 5.5 post office on a computer that is running the Internet Addressing (GWIA) component and the GroupWise 5.2 client, the addresses for the migrated messages may appear truncated or shortened.

The main reason behind this issue is that GroupWise 5.2 client cannot translate the GWIA addresses because this functionality was added in GroupWise version 5.5.

Therefore this issue can be dealt only with the help of third party migration solution. Additionally, The Novell GroupWise Version 5.5 client is not supported in the MS Exchange Migration Wizard.

Third party GroupWise to Exchange migration software utilities support migration of GroupWise address books to PST format readable on Exchange server. Novell GroupWise Remote is a functionally great as it works in Caching mode or on-line mode connecting directly to your Postoffice. Similarly GroupWise WebAccess is great too. Although, the problem with the two is same, that both cannot take your Archives with you and access them remotely. Let’s discuss how can we make GroupWise Archives portable and create an absolute path using Windows internals, so GroupWise can see the absolute path.

You can use iFolder to carry your GroupWise Archives:

  1. Copy your current Archives from its location (see the current location under Tools > Options > Environment > File Location > Archive Directory) to the new folder on iFolder such as i:\archives
  2. Go back to GroupWise to change the location of archives to the newly created folder with all archive files copied in it already
  3. If in case GroupWise asks you whether you want to re-associate your archive with new folder, click Yes
  4. While connecting to your PC or laptop the other time, allow archive folder to synchronize
  5. After the sync is finished, run GroupWise to check all the archived emails as well as your current online mailbox are present.

The location of the archive folder remains in the GroupWise database. This means that your path to archive folder is “absolute” which cannot be changed from one PC to another. To resolve this problem, you need to use a few Windows tricks to fool GroupWise so it thinks that your archives reside in I:\archives on both systems.

You can trick Windows by SHARING the Archives folder, then going to your Networking Neighborhood and mapping I: to that “share.” This makes your drive letter I: like an absolute connection to that folder. Do this on both (or all) systems and your GroupWise Remote at home or on your laptop and your Local GroupWise at work should see and be able to use Archives at the same time.
